2001 National Travel Seminar Class Diary

Monday March 12, 2001

The Capital, Dept. of Agriculture & Kennedy Center

Washington D.C.
Monday’s schedule began with Daniel Heath from the Office of Management and Budget. He termed his job as "desktop agriculture". It was interesting to note how much of his time was devoted to ensuring that statements made by administration officials coincides with the Presidential political agenda.

The IALP Class of 2002 crains their necks to view the magnificent artwork in the Capitol Rotunda.
For lunch, the group toured the Capitol, escorted by Bill Zimmerman, special agent, threat section, U.S. Capitol Police. He pointed out the differences between his agency and the Secret Service, noting that the Secret Service is responsible for two while his group watches over 535. He also pointed out that the President must be invited to the "Hill", and that the Speaker of the House does not necessarily have to be a member of the House.
The afternoon was spent at the Jamie Whitten Building which houses the US Department of Agriculture. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman’s Chief of Staff Dale Moore and Chief Ag Economist Keith Collins shared their experiences with the change of administration and the early beginnings of the new farm bill. While in the halls of the USDA, we were fortunate to have IALF board member Gary Baise introduce us to James Mosley from Indiana. He is considered by many to be on the short list to be the next Deputy Secretary of Agriculture.

Brian Puetz takes his turn in the geographic center of Washington D.C. which is located in the middle of the Capitol rotunda.

The finale of the day was a cultural experience at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. We toured the beautiful building and watched a performance on the Millennium Stage by folk singer Peter Mayer
