Dalian's Interest in Agriculture

Dalian, China
The day began with a 6:30am. departure from Beijing and a short plane ride to Dalian. Upon arrival in Dalian, we had the opportunity to meet with the Secretary General Sun Chunlan, of the Liaoning Provincial Committee. This meeting provided the class with a short briefing of the city of Dalian and its interest in agriculture. The Liaoning Providences have interest in vegetables, fruits, flowers, rice, corn, animal husbandry and forestry.

Our next stop included a briefing with Governor Yang Xinhau. The Governor Xinhau spoke of many of the similarities between the Liaoning Providence and the State of Illinois. Both enjoy continued development, strong agriculture, and similar growing seasons. Further discussions included talks of China signing of the WTO.  Since the signing of the WTO, our Leadership class has been the first group of agriculturalist to visit Dilian from the United States. Mr. Xinhau emphasized the importance of China being able to abide by the same international rules as the other members in the Word Trade Organization. Governor Xinhau also complimented the US on being an agriculture model for the rest of the world to learn from. Following the briefing, we had the honor of enjoying a banquet provided by the Liaoning Providence.

Next, the class enjoyed a tour of the city of Dalian. The tour included a visit to the Modern Museum of Dalian. Our class became the first American group to tour the 200 million dollar facility.

After the museum tour we journeyed on to the Dalian Evergreen Agricultural Development Center. The facility specialized in growing tomatoes and flowers in a greenhouse. Evergreen selectively breeds seedlings imported from Israel and exported most of its final products to Russia.
