We traveled from
Shanghai through Hong Kong to Hanoi, arriving around 4pm local
time. We were greeted by Henry Schmick from the USDA at the
airport with an unusual surprise, all luggage was thrown on a
small truck to be transported to the hotel, arriving an hour
after we did |
|

Vietnam agriculture |
On
the way to the hotel the class saw Vietnamese agriculture as we
drove past the rice fields and into Hanoi. We observed farmers
moving water with buckets from ditches to rice patties and many
oxen in the fields and crossing the road. |
|
Traveling through the
streets of Hanoi, we saw thousands of scooters, bicycles and
motorcycles going in all directions at all times. |
|
Traffic lights and stripes on the road are
interpreted merely as a suggestion by local drivers! Many of
the buildings in Hanoi still show signs of French influence in
their architecture.

After checking into the hotel, the class
departed for the American Press Club for dinner with Chef Donald
Berger and Mark Barnett from Pacific Basin Partnership. We were
also joined by Henry Schmick, Steve Hewitt and Dr. Jane Barton
from the USDA. Chef Berger discussed procurement of food
ingredients for his restaurant locally and abroad and Mark
Barnett discussed spice trade with Asian countries.
